A moment of weakness

“I’m really proud of you, y’know.” Ashes whispered, continuing his trail of thoughts that he had been murmuring. Kat glanced back at him, but remained silent. He hadn’t looked at her the whole time anyway, instead staring out at the sky. His chest was bare, but thankfully it wasn’t cold. It had been a long time since Kat had seen him bared in front of her, both physically and emotionally.

When the female said nothing in reply, he continued. “You’ve done so well with your children.” She closed her eyes at this for a moment before opening them again and glancing at him out the corner of her eye. “The first three are growing up. And you’re doing so well with Aki…I wish I could help you out, but I know you won’t let me.” A shudder rippled through his body, and a flare of unhinged anger flashed dangerously in his eyes. It disappeared after a moment, but Kat had noticed it, and she felt the urge to edge away from him, in fear of that familiar demented look returning to his eyes, knowing she would be victim of his anger.

“I watch you a lot. But I’m sure you know that. I just like to take in little details about you. When you redye your hair. When you cut it. When you get a new tattoo…speaking of which, I like your new ones. The two diamonds on your wrist, for Aki and Aziz.” He smiled softly, but Kat frowned, paranoia fluttering in the pit of her stomach. It had always been an unsettling fact that she knew his eyes were upon her constantly, but she managed to ignore it and get on with her life but…it was different hearing him admit it, and so freely talk about it.

“Aki is so beautiful, Kat. He’s everything I wanted in a son, in a child. I so wish you were Janus’s true mother. I’m sure, part of him does too. And you know, the only person I ever wanted to have children with was you. You know that very well.”

“I did.” Kat whispered in a hushed voice.

“You’re doing so well with him. I’m sure he’s a pain at times. I’ve been told about him a lot…I like hearing from friends what he’s like, what he’s been doing…I get to keep up with him. But I’ve heard that he’s a lot like me in nature.” He glanced at her for a moment with an apologetic smile. “For that I’m sorry.” He sighed and glanced away once more. “He really is so, so beautiful, and you’re the best mother for him, you love and protect your children, shelter them, like a mother should…even if that means they must be sheltered from their own father. Unfortunately…my own mother couldn’t do any of that.”

Kat cast her eyes downward at the mention of Victoria, but remained silent, listening to him. “I sometimes wish that things could have been different…we could have lived the life I promised you, we could stay in our house, waste our days together, I’d take you places occasionally, we’d travel, go on road trips, either together or with Skye, Zach and Alice…and when we had seen everything and done everything we wanted to, we’d come home for good, settle down, have however many children we wanted to and love and look after them.”

Kat felt sick. She clutched her stomach, but Ashes waved a dismissive hand. “Whatever. That cannot and will not happen.” Then, he was mute.

The silence stretched on for what seemed like forever. Ashes closed his eyes. He drew in a deep breath, trying his hardest to inhale the calming, cool night air. When he spoke, his voice was low and threatening. “I loved…I still love you so much. We would have been the perfect family…if only you hadn’t ruined it.” His final sentence was spat out in a snarl laced with hatred. Another shudder passed through him, feeling himself grow irritated and angered. He heard the tiniest gasp, and when he finally opened his eyes, Kat was gone. She had fled him, once more.

“Déjà vu.” Ashes chuckled lowly to himself, his mouth stretching into his normal, familiar, twisted smirk. “Perhaps one day we could be the perfect family. And you can be kept in line. Surely, my darling, you cannot keep my own child from me forever.” His low chuckle intensified into a round of unsettling laughter.

His moment of weakness was over.

Oh man these colors are all fabulous, the shading is well done and accurate for the night setting, really nice!
I love those stars in the background vuv
And also I really liked the little story you put in the description, it's interesting! Do you plan on writing a story with them?
